  • People often ask what I do for work.

The answer is occupational therapist.

But the longer answer is that I spend my days helping people feel seen, heard, understood, and supported.

Some days that looks like helping someone understand themselves a little better.

Some days it looks like celebrating a win that might seem tiny to everyone else but is actually huge.

Some days it looks like listening, advocating, problem-solving, adapting, encouraging, or simply sitting alongside someone while things feel hard.

I don’t always get to see the long-term impact of what I do.

But every now and then someone says, “I’ve never thought about it like that before”, or “they’ve never done that before”, or “thank you for understanding”, and it reminds me why I love this work.

But nobody really tells you what that means.

At its core, declarative language is about sharing observations, information, or curiosity instead of giving instructions.

  • Sometimes the most important preparation before working with children isn’t the session plan, the resources, or the coffee. It’s checking in with your own nervous system first. 🤍

Kids are constantly picking up on the energy around them. They notice our pace, our tone, our tension, and our calm, even when we don’t realise it ourselves.

Not because we need to be perfectly calm all the time. Just because co-regulation starts with us too 🌿

My clients gave me perspective.

They taught me that progress is often quiet.
That play can hold so much learning.
That people usually aren’t struggling “for no reason”.
And that feeling safe and understood can change everything.

The longer I do this job, the less I care about perfect behaviour, perfect sessions, or perfect outcomes.

And the more I care about connection, flexibility, regulation, and helping people feel genuinely supported 💖

  • I think a lot about how quickly we label kids as “distracted” or “unfocused” without stopping to ask whether the environment actually supports attention in the first place.

Because attention isn’t just about trying harder 👀

It’s affected by sensory input, regulation, movement needs, stress, sleep, connection, predictability, and whether your nervous system feels safe enough to engage.

A lot of kids are doing the best they can in environments that are genuinely overwhelming for them.

And honestly? Most adults would struggle too.

💭 One of the most common pieces of advice you’ll hear in neurodiversity spaces is to use “non-demanding” or “declarative” language.

But nobody really tells you what that means.

At its core, declarative language is about sharing observations, information, or curiosity instead of giving instructions.

It doesn’t mean never having expectations, it doesn’t mean letting people do whatever they want, and it definitely isn’t a magic script.

It’s simply one way to reduce pressure and support autonomy.

Sometimes the difference between:
“Put your shoes on”

and

“Your shoes are by the door”

isn’t about the action/task itself. It’s how the task feels. Changing up our language can sometimes make all the difference.

Uni gave me the theory.
