Frequently Asked Questions

Kalos Therapy

What does "Kalos" mean?

“Kalos” is a Greek word that means “beautiful” or “good” in a broad, holistic sense. It often refers to beauty that is not only physical but also moral, intellectual, or ethical. In ancient Greek philosophy, “kalos” was linked to the concept of excellence and virtuous qualities, reflecting both inner and outer beauty, and goodness.

At Kalos Therapy, we embrace this meaning, celebrating the beauty of diversity and the goodness in every individual.

Where can I find you?

Kalos Therapy is located in Shop 9, 70 Bulcock Street, Caloundra. We’re a short distance to Bulcock and Kings beaches, close to other health providers, shops, and bus stops. Read more about our clinic space here.

Clinic Access Access: Please note that there is 1 flight of stairs to access Kalos Therapy. Please let us know in advance if this poses any issues (i.e., if you need assistance up the stairs or if you require the appointment to be held in a different location, such as the nearby Caloundra Library+ where we can book a meeting room).

We also provide mobile services to the southern end of the Sunshine Coast, including appointments in your home, school (if the school permits), or other community space such as a local park.

Occupational Therapy

What is an Occupational Therapist (OT)?

At Kalos Therapy, Occupational Therapists (OTs) help people of all ages build the skills they need for daily living and thriving in their environments. We work with children and individuals who are experiencing challenges that prevent them from living to their potential, supporting them in becoming more independent and confident in their daily routines.

Occupational therapists focus on enhancing a person’s ability to participate in the activities that matter most to them. This might include:

  • Developing fine motor skills for handwriting, dressing, or playing.
  • Supporting sensory processing to manage overstimulation and feel more comfortable in different environments.
  • Building emotional regulation and coping strategies for challenges like anxiety or stress.
  • Helping with self-care skills like eating and hygiene.

Our goal is to empower each individual to succeed in their own way—whether in school, at home, or in the community—by providing tailored strategies and interventions that build confidence and independence.

What qualifications do Occupational Therapists (OTs) require?

Occupational Therapists are required to complete a 4-year university degree and must hold registration through the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). We also hold the required working with children checks (which is a Blue Card in QLD) and an NDIS Worker Screening Check (Yellow Card).

How do I know if we need Occupational Therapy (OT) services?

Occupational therapy (OT) can be beneficial for anyone experiencing difficulties with day-to-day tasks or activities that are important to them. You or a person you care for may benefit from OT if you:

  • Struggle with fine motor skills (e.g., handwriting, using utensils, or buttoning clothing).
  • Find it challenging to manage sensory input, feeling overwhelmed or under-responsive to sounds, lights, textures, or movements.
  • Experience difficulties with self-care tasks like dressing, eating, or personal hygiene.
  • Have trouble with emotional regulation and coping with anxiety, frustration, or transitions.
  • Face challenges in school or work due to focus, attention, or learning difficulties.
  • Need support developing social skills or engaging in play and recreational activities.
  • Want strategies to improve independence in daily routines and activities.

Appointments and Billing

How do I book an appointment?

You do not need a referral from a GP or specialist to engage with an Occupational Therapist. Simply complete our referral form and one of our team will be in contact to discuss further with you.

Once I send a referral, what's the process?

Once we receive the client’s details, the following tasks will be completed (not necessarily in this order):

    • Contact will be made via phone or email with the client and/or their caregiver or support coordinator to discuss the client’s referral information and OT needs.
    • A consent form and risk screener will be sent to the client or their caregiver. The risk screener asks questions such as whether the client has any allergies, presents with any behaviours, etc.
    • A service agreement will be sent to the client and/or their caregiver to provide more details about our services, our responsibilities, the client/their supports’ responsibilities, and confirm the hours that will be used for OT services.
    • An appointment will be booked either by confirming a time via email, phone, or via our online booking link.
What funding options are available?

The most common funding options include:

  • National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) funding. Occupational Therapy services are billed under Capacity Building: Improved Daily Living. Please note that we are not currently a registered NDIS provider and so we can only provide services to self-managed or plan-managed NDIS participants.
  • Medicare Chronic Disease Management (CDM) which includes Medicare rebates for up to 5 sessions per calendar year. This documentation is completed by a General Practitioner (GP).
  • Private Health Insurance, where part of the cost may be paid for by your insurance company. Please check with your provider to determine what you are able to claim.
  • Private payments, where the entire cost of the service will be paid for out-of-pocket.
How much do appointments cost?

Kalos Therapy works off an hourly rate of $193.99, which is in line with the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits. As per NDIS guidelines, we charge the same rate for all clients accessing our OT services, including privately paid supports. Click here for more information about specific assessments/reports and their approximate costs.

Is telehealth right for me?

Telehealth isn’t suitable for everyone. We prefer to complete telehealth sessions with individuals aged 10+ as this allows for smoother, more interactive sessions. Telehealth sessions can be completed using a laptop, tablet, or smart phone, however a laptop is preferred as this allows our therapist to utilise more interactive and engaging therapy activities.

Here at Kalos Therapy, we complete our telehealth sessions via Microsoft Teams.

What if I need to cancel an appointment?

Our cancellation policy outlines our policies regarding cancelling appointments. To summarise, you must make contact with our team via email or text to cancel your appointment. If you are an NDIS participant please give a brief reason for the cancellation (e.g., sick). Cancellations within 24 hours of the appointment start time may be billed the full amount, however if this is the case our therapists will do their best to find other billable work (e.g., creating resources, working on reports) for the client.

What is "billable" work?

Billable work are tasks our therapists are able to charge for. We do not charge for administrative tasks, as these are absorbed into our hourly rate.

Billable work may include:

  • Face-to-face or telehealth appointments, including both one-off assessments and ongoing therapy appointments;
  • Travel to and/or from an appointment at your home or in the community;
  • Writing reports;
  • Completion of a therapy support plan, which is a goal-setting document used to record the client’s therapy goals and outline what our therapists will do to work towards these goals;
  • Scoring assessments;
  • Client coordination, including liaison with other stakeholders (e.g., school teacher, other allied health practitioner); and/or
  • Resource development, but only if the resource is being designed/created specifically for the client.

For ongoing therapy appointments, your service agreement will typically include hours for therapy sessions, travel (if applicable) and additional non face-to-face billable time that may be used for client coordination and/or resource development.

Non-billable work includes:

  • Communication regarding appointments, such as booking or rescheduling appointments
  • Creating documentation, such as a Service Agreement or our internal Risk Assessment
